Who is Redd?
Redd is an original character of mine that I’ve used as an artistic vessel in exploring art as a whole. Throughout my artistic journey I’ve stooped to several lows where artist block had a hold on me. Several points in my life I almost stopped art all together.
Redd was a character that helped me as an artist when I first dove into the world of COLOR. I was primarily a graphite artist throughout the early stages of my life I hadn’t really attempted anything in color for a while. I created a character that was inspired by many series I loved, like Adventure Time and Kirby, where imagination runs wild and possibilities are endless. I wanted a character that would embody that limitlessness.
His hat is actually based off of the process of cell division; specifically the final phase of cell division, telophase, in which two nuclei are created after the chromosomes move to opposite ends. Symbolically, this defines Redd as a rebirth of new ideas. A renaissance. A process of continuous transformation in one’s self. I wanted to grow as an artist alongside the growth of the reality in which Redd resides.
Blank Space Compeition 2025 - UTD - Entry
This piece challenged my understanding of scale, background design, and character effects. I designed the mech off of an NES and gave it NES Power Glove gauntlets for smashing.
Blank Space Compeition 2024 - UTD - 2nd Place
This piece challenged me to grow as an artist. I got to explore a very dynamic action pose that allowed for all his limbs to be on a seperate rotational axis. All throughout the process, I had to keep in mind the spacial understanding of the relationship of each limb to eachother and had to give Redd a dynamic pose that has interesting angles, anatomically correct within the context of the shot, and fun to look at.
